Low F/E Trumpet
F/E-alto
trumpet with three rotary valves
We have copied the inner dimensions of a 4-valved instrument from
1878 by Václav Frantisek Cervený in F/E-flat, that is today
located in the Trumpet Museum, Bad Säckingen. The form is representative
of the normal Cervený trumpets in F. Additional tunings in E-flat
and D are also made possible through the use of extra tuning slides. F-alto
trumpets were in use during the 19th century, after the invention of the
valves (ca. 1815). Composers such as, Schumann, Schubert, Wagner, Verdi,
Dvorak, Berlioz, César Franck, Bruckner, R. Strauss, Mahler (R.
Strauss und Mahler mostly for 2nd and 3rd parts) wrote works for this
instrument. The Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich recently recorded the symphonies
of Schumann (Ex Libris, spring 2004). The first and second were played
on Egger natural trumpets, while the third and fourth on the alto trumpets.
Additionally, natural horns from our workshop were also used.
Design
The valve
slides have been made with Heckel geometry. Bell and tubing have been
hammered and soldered. All other tubing is made seemless.
